Most people aren't. Typically, homeowners rely on candles and
flashlight, on the fireplace and extra blankets, and on eating out. They
hope that the freezer will stay cold if they don't open the door.
Businesses lock up, send employees home and hope that the outage doesn't
last long. Truth is, outages are happening more often and they're
lasting longer. Extreme weather accounts for some of the problems, but
many are the result of increased demands on our aging electrical grid.
And because our electrical system is regional, an outage in another
state could affect your power as well.
